Letter: Real Issue in Hinsdale Is Leadership Failure

The Hinsdale Select Board recently claimed they are "flabbergasted" by the Dalton Police Department's decision to suspend mutual aid. This public display of confusion is staggering. It reveals a severe lack of leadership and a deep disconnect from the established facts.

Dalton did not make a rash or emotional choice. They made a strict, calculated decision to protect their own officers. Dalton leadership clearly stated their reasons. They cited deep concerns about officer safety, trust, training consistency, and post-incident accountability. These are massive red flags for any law enforcement agency.

These concerns stem directly from the fatal shooting of Biagio Kauvil. During this tragic event, Hinsdale command staff failed to follow their own policies. We saw poor judgment, tactical errors, and clear supervisory failures. When a police department breaks its own rules, it places both the public and responding officers at strict risk. No responsible outside agency will subject its own team to a command structure that lacks basic operational competence.



For elected officials to look at a preventable tragedy, clear policy violations, and the swift withdrawal of a neighboring agency, yet still claim confusion, shows willful blindness. If the Select Board cannot recognize the obvious institutional failures staring them in the face, they disqualify themselves from providing meaningful oversight.

We cannot accept leaders who dismiss documented failures and deflect blame. We must demand true accountability. The real problem is not that Dalton withdrew its support. The real problem is a Hinsdale leadership team that refuses to face its own failures.

Pittsfield Council Reviews Public Safety Budget, Keeps SpotShotter

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On the fourth day of budget deliberations, the City Council preliminarily approved public safety and public service budgets.

Councilors deliberated the Pittsfield Police Department's $16,439,421 spending plan for more than 90 minutes. Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren unsuccessfully motioned to cut $220,000 for ShotSpotter services. 

He said the acoustic gunshot detection technology is not well used throughout the country, citing other communities that have opted out or are exploring it. 

Pittsfield has two more years on its contract; while councilors voted down the budget reduction several were willing to explore the impact data and see if those funds could be used elsewhere. 

Police Chief Marc Maddalena reported that there has been a significant decrease in shots fired calls, and attributed it to the surveillance technology assisting enforcement. He said it also comes in faster than 911 calls. 

"If people know that just by that noise alone that we're responding within seconds, that's preventing them from utilizing that weapon," he said. 

"So that in of itself is saving lives." 

It has an about 20 percent accuracy rate, and police respond to every activation. 

On Sunday, at least two homes in the area of Memorial Drive and Doyle Drive were struck by gunfire and investigators located 17 shell casings on scene. This was brought up during conversation; it was reported that there were 13 impulses on ShotSpotter during the incident.
