Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus ... and he can call your little one! The Pittsfield Department of Community Development Recreation Program will be conducting the annual North Pole Calling Program, a special call from Santa, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, and Thursday, Dec. 18, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Signup forms will be sent home with Pittsfield children in kindergarten and grades 1 and 2. Forms are also available at the City Clerk’s Office in room 103 of City Hall, 70 Allen St., or through the Department of Community Development website at www.cityofpittsfield.org. Completed forms must be returned by Wednesday, Dec. 17. In 2013, more than 180 children were called by Santa.
Volunteers and Items Needed for Holiday Gift Bag: The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Berkshire County invites members of the community to participate in the annual holiday collection and distribution of gift bags to patients in the psychiatric wards at Berkshire Medical Center. NAMI Berkshire County is accepting items including warm winter hats, gloves, socks, travel size toiletries, nail care items, pocket planners, games and puzzles, journals, pens and pencils, movies and books. In addition to items, the organization is also seeking volunteers to assist with the packing and distribution of the gift bags. Those interested in volunteering should contact Brenda at 413-443-1666 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Donated items can be dropped off at the NAMI Berkshire County office, 333 East Street, Room 417, Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted, and checks can be made out to NAMI Berkshire County.
The Department of Public Works announces that sand piles have been placed at three locations around the city: the Barker Road fire station, the Pecks Road fire station and the Williams Street Plaza. Sand will be available for pickup by Pittsfield residents for their own personal use throughout the winter season. Residents are requested to limit their pickups to 50 pounds (one 5-gallon pail) per visit.
