Alan DuBois Vaber

Alan DuBois Vaber, 74, of 185 George St. died Monday at home after a year-long battle with cancer. Born in Great Barrington on Feb. 9, 1927, son of Louis F. and Mildred DuBois Vaber, he grew up in West Stockbridge and was a 1945 graduate of the former Williams High School. He served in the Navy for two years near the end of World War II. He then entered Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1951. After college, Mr. Vaber joined Mount Greylock Broadcasting in Pittsfield and was a program manager for WMGT Television when it first went on the air in the early 1950s. He then served in employee relations for General Electric Co. in both Binghamton, N.Y., and Pittsfield. After his retirement, he returned to radio broadcasting in Cape May, N.J. He returned to the Berkshires nearly 10 years ago and hosted "The 1340 Club" on WBRK, a program named for the station's AM frequency and featured recordings from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. He appeared on the program each Friday afternoon and Saturday morning until six weeks ago. He leaves his wife, the former Joan Chatel, whom he married Oct. 3, 1975; two sons, Michael Alan Vaber of Lenox and Christopher B. Vaber of Pearl River, N.Y.; a daughter, Victoria A. Stevenson of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Laughran "Larry" Vaber of West Stockbridge; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A daughter, Susan Gomes, died in December 1999.
