RUSSELL WEBB CONKLIN

Mr. Russell Webb Conklin, 79, of Green Avenue, Canaan, died Sunday, December 31, 2000 at Sharon Hospital. Born April 30, 1921 in Sheffield he was one of seven children of Charles M. and Margaret M. Welch Conklin. He attended local schools and graduated from the former Sheffied High School with the class of 1940. A Veteran of WWII, he served in the United States Army Air Force in the 69th Bombardment Squadron. Following the war he went to work at the family business, Conklin Limestone. He later started a branch in Lincoln, RI and Columbia, CT, while continuing to manage the Canaan Quarry. Retiring in 1998. Mr. Conklin still continued to visit the quarry daily, giving advice and socializing with old friends. Mr. Conklin was a member of the VFW Post #6851 in Canaan and the Housatonic Lodge AF & AM. Above all, Mr. Conklin was a loving family man and a wonderful friend to all. He is survived by his wife of fifty eight years, the former Alma “Tootie” Savage, whom he married July 12, 1942. His three children: Russell Wesley Conklin of Salisbury, CT, Jo-Ann Conklin of Providence, RI, & Jesse Conklin of Ashley Falls, MA, two sisters: Bertha Newton of Braidenton, FL & June Samuels of Chula Vista, CA. A brother: Harley J. Conklin of Braidenton, FL & Providence, RI three grandchildren: Courtney Elizabeth, Ashley Rose and Brett Wesley Conklin his daughter in laws: Lyn Conklin and Ellie Conklin, a sister in law: Betty Bruni, a special cousin: Yvonne Whitney, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by three brothers: Ed Conklin, George Conklin and Brooks Conklin. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 3, 2001 from four p.m. until seven p.m. at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, Great Barrington. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday January 4, 200l at eleven am. at the- family plot in Ashley Falls Cemetery. Contributions in Mr. Conklin’s memory may be made to either the North Canaan Ambulance Squad or to the North Canaan Fire Department in cam of the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
