ALLEN R. BELL

Allen Richard Bell, 76, of St. Stephen's Lane East, Glenville, N.Y., died Wednesday at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y. He was manager of GE Ordnance Systems in Pittsfield from 1972 to 1987. Born in Palmer on May 5, 1924, son of Charles W. Bell Sr. and Mildred Bradley Bell, he was a 1942 graduate of Palmer High School. From 1942 to 1944, he attended the University of Michigan under the ROTC program and, during the summers of 1943 and 1944, attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied meteorology. He served as an Army weather officer from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Bell returned to the University of Michigan in 1946 and received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1949. He worked at GE in engineering and program management. He also worked at the Lynn GE in the aircraft gas turbines division, in the power transformer division in Pittsfield, and in the gas turbines and GE flight test divisions, both in Schenectady. From 1951 to 1964, he was manager of GE's Flight Test Operation in Glenville, N.Y., and from 1964 to 1966 was manager of its Re-Entry System department in Philadelphia. He managed the GE Rocket Test Station in Malta, N.Y., from 1966 to 1969, and GE Ordnance, also in Malta, from 1969 to 1972. Mr. Bell was a member of the Elfun Society. He and his wife, the former Aila "Roni" Bell, were married June 8, 1946. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Virginia Lockwood of Schenectady, Carolyn Yacura of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Amanda Bell of Glenville; two brothers, Charles W. Bell Jr. of Wallingford, Conn., and Roger E. Bell of Bethesda, Md., and a grandson.
