Joan C. Cheevers

Joan C. Cheevers, 69, of 301 Birch Bluff Drive, Westfield, formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday at Western Massachusetts Hospital in Westfield. Born in Pittsfield on Nov. 9, 1932, daughter of the late John and Evelyn Rabideau Hardy, she graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1951. She also took courses at Springfield Technical Community College. Mrs. Cheevers worked as a cosmetics buyer for Mack's Drugs until she moved to Westfield in 1963. A homemaker, she also worked as a dietary aid at Barnard Rest Home and as a seamstress at The Stitchery, both in Westfield. Mrs. Cheevers was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church in Westfield. Education, particularly literacy, were social causes important to her. She leaves her husband, Albert C. Cheevers, whom she married in 1953; two daughters, Nancy A. Cheevers of Northampton and Carol Snyder of Monson; a sister, Jean Peach of Springfield; a brother, John Handy of Lunenburg, and a grandson, Ryan Cheevers-Brown. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 at SOUTHWICK-FORASTIERE FUNERAL HOME, 624 College Highway, Southwick. Memorial Mass Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Westfield. Burial will follow in the Mass. Memorial Veterans' Cemetery, Agawam.
