John Lewis, 84

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —  Harry John Lewis also known as “John Lewis” of Williamstown, MA, died Sunday October 26, 2025 at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, MA. He was born in Boston, MA on December 26, 1940, a son of the late Harry W. and Estella B. (Mikaniewicz) Lewis.

John attended Williamstown schools and graduated from the former Williamstown High School where he was a member of their football team. He attended Michigan State University. He was a decorated veteran serving in the Army as a private during the Vietnam War.

John had a distinguished career as a law enforcement officer in the state of California. John was a longtime body builder and often seen at local gyms. He also enjoyed attending athletic events at Williams College and was very proud of his 56’ Chevy.

He leaves his nieces, Tamara Legacy Cleary, Raquel Legacy and Cousins Paul Mikaniewicz, Kathy Hynes Mikaniewicz and many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary B. Lewis Legacy who died in 1996.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services with full military honors for John Lewis will be on Friday, November 7, 2025 at Eastlawn Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Memorial Donations may be made to the Williamstown Youth Center Donate 66 School St. Williamstown, Ma. Sad to hear you have passed away Johnny. We have been buddies since the 80s when we worked out at Gold's Gym in San Diego. You bounced at my favorite hangout "The Daily Planet", and I bounced at yours "The PB Cafe"

Everyone would come there to say hello to you and tell you how much you looked like Telly Savalas and you always say you name was Johnny Stompanano. Then you changed it to just "The Face". you were so funny.

When you went back to Williamstown to care for your Mom we would talk every other week. Right up until 2025. Then you stopped calling, but I picked it up and called you. I did notice a memory issue and started to really worry. After July you stopped answering your phone so I mailed you a couple letters. Sad to find out something was wrong and you passed on a Sunday (10/26/25)

John was a regular customer at the former North Adams Movieplex where I assistant managed back in 2012-2015. I always looked forward to seeing him on Saturday mornings, where he'd come, sometimes an hour before we opened to the public. We always left the rear door unlocked for him and a private parking spot. I enjoyed our long conversations about his life and the people whose lives he impacted. He was a good man, honest and hard working, always sharing the new things he was doing while working on his house.

Known Big Johnny from the neighborhood since 1970, he was cool with his fringe boots & mush mouse hat different then everyone else in the hood I guess because he had traveled a lot in the 60s, his white 56 Chevy was his prize possession he influenced me into weight lifting in later years in the attic at Williams I even visited him in Pacific Beach Ca in 87. Die hard gym rat he was always strong and had some great sayings from his California days. Rest well my friend I will miss your calls.
