Susan Barbara Chalifoux, 81

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Susan Barbara (Carlton) Chalifoux, 81, formerly of North Adams, MA, died peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Scranton, PA. She was born in North Adams on December 3, 1944, a beloved daughter of the late William C. and Stacia (Zera) Carlton.

Susan graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1962 and later earned her nursing degree from St. Luke’s Nursing School. A dedicated registered nurse, she worked at North Adams Regional Hospital and Northern Berkshire Mental Health, and also served as Director of Nursing at North Adams Commons. She found great satisfaction in teaching nursing, sharing her knowledge and compassion with others. Susan proudly owned and operated Feminine Twist, a women’s clothing boutique, for more than 10 years. She held a deep affection for North Adams and truly appreciated the beauty, character, and many pleasures of life in the Berkshires.

Susan was a devoted communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD educator. She volunteered for many organizations throughout Berkshire County including VNA Hospice and St Vincent de Paul Society.

Above all, Susan cherished her family and found her greatest joy in the time she spent with those she loved, especially her grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart. She had a wonderful sense of adventure and embraced life with enthusiasm, whether traveling to new places, enjoying a day of shopping, or decorating her home with her unmistakable sense of style. Susan had a wonderful flair for fashion and an eye for beauty, bringing elegance, warmth, and personality to everything she touched. Hosting and entertaining friends and family was a favorite pastime. Her love of life, sense of fun, and the happiness she found in sharing special moments with her family will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.

Susan was grateful to spend the final six years of her life closer to her children and grandchildren, cherishing their companionship, love, and support as her needs increased.

Susan leaves behind her daughter, Beth Florey (Richard) of Clarks Summit, PA; her sons, Brad Chalifoux (Kristy) of Hull, MA, and Brett Chalifoux of Clarks Summit, PA; and her beloved grandchildren, Colin, Evan, and Bryce Florey, and Liam and Addie Chalifoux. She also leaves behind her brother, William F. Carlton (Cecile) of Nashua, NH; her sister, Geraldine Bednarz (Thomas) of Cheshire, MA; and many nieces and nephews.

Susan was predeceased by her husband, Louis J. Chalifoux Jr., whom she married on October 8, 1966, and who passed away on February 25, 2024.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of the fourth floor at Allied Skilled Nursing Center and Allied Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion they provided Susan over the past several years.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on October 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams, MA. Burial will follow in the family plot at Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will take place the same day from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church, 70 Marshall St, North Adams, MA. I am so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I have many fond memories of seeing your mom when I would go to NARH after school to visit my mom Carol who was also an RN there. All I remember is lots of laughter when they were together. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Dear Beth, Brett, and Brad, I was so deeply saddened to hear about your mom’s passing, and I wanted to send you all my love during this difficult time. Your mom had such a rare and special gift—every single time I saw her, she made me feel completely seen, heard, and loved. She did that with everyone. What an incredible way to be, by letting people know, "You're seen, heard and cared for". I really can't think of a better gift to give someone, especially to those going through hard times. As you all know very well, that's just your mom. Thinking back to when we were younger, running into her while walking my dogs up toward Natural Bridge along the trail on the border of your property always turned an ordinary walk into such a warm, bright moment. Years later, getting to cross paths with her professionally when our agencies collaborated was such a privilege. Seeing her deep dedication to the well-being of her clients showed the exact same heart, integrity, and compassion she brought to everything she touched. She was a truly wonderful woman who loved her family beyond measure, and her incredible kindness lives on so clearly in the three of you and your children. I am holding you all close in my thoughts and heart.
Warm regards,,
Todd
