George W. Kelsey

George W. Kelsey, 86, of 1032 North St. died Wednesday at East Ridge Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 24, 1914, son of George W. and Bertha Noble Kelsey, he was a 1932 graduate of Pittsfield High School and a 1936 graduate of Boston University. Mr. Kelsey was a member of the Massachusetts State Guard during World War II. He was employed in the family business, the former Kelsey Market on North Street, until its closing, then worked for Olan Mills studios. He later moved to Bristol, Conn., where he was employed by Eastern Photo in Thomaston, Conn., for 17 years. He retired in 1985 and returned to Pittsfield. Mr. Kelsey was a member of the Pittsfield Senior Center. His wife, the former Julia C. Herzog, whom he married Feb. 3, 1962, died Sept. 3, 2000. He leaves three daughters, Sharon K. Gordon of Flagler Beach, Fla., Jeriann Kelsey of Gloucester and Kristine S. Kelsey of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a stepson, Charles Silvernail of Wharton, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Joann Dellert of Pittsfield and Judith Rice of Windsor; 16 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 11 a.m. at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with his nephew, the Rev. George Tragaskis of Altamont, N.Y., officiating. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday, Feb. 19, from 4 to 7. If friends desire, donations may be made in his memory to the Memory Clinic, in care of the funeral home.
