Samuel Wallach

Samuel Wallach, 91, of West Road died Wednesday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Dolina, Poland, on July 1, 1909, son of Abraham and Bertha Schor Wallach, he emigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of 10 months. He attended New York City schools and graduated from City College of New York in 1929. Mr. Wallach taught history and economics in the New York City school system for many years. He moved to Alford in 1978 after retiring as administrator at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, where he led a unit for the treatment of developmentally disabled children. He was an active advocate for the Children's Health Program and was the oldest member of Fitness Express in Great Barrington. His wife, the former Lottie Tanenbaum, whom he married in 1939, died in 1995. He leaves two daughters, Joan Scott of Princeton, N.J., and Ruth Fraukel of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Shirley Auerbach of Alford; a brother, actor Eli Wallach of New York City; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at home at 48 West Road, Alford, on Sunday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Health Program in care of FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
