Philip A. Coons

Philip A. Coons, 76, of 892 Sheffield Egremont Road, died Friday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Richmond, MA, November 9, 1924 he was the son of Harold and Aletta Brasse Coons and attended the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. Mr. Coons was a dairy farmer for several years in Newtown, CT before returning to operate a dairy farm on the Sheffield Egremont Road in 1962. In 1968 he joined the Eastern Cooperative Dairy where he was a dairy animal artifical insemenator in the tri-state area. He retired in 1986. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic Pacific Theater where he was a Gunners Mate on the USS Denver. He was discharged in December 1945. Mr. Coons was a member of James A. Modolo Post 8348, Veterans of Foreign Wars, of Great Barrington and a past President of the Sheffield Sportsmens Club. He leaves his wife Rose Zucco Coons whom he married April 29, 1946, two sons Phillip H. Coons of Waldorf, Maryland, and Brian J. Coons of Kennett Square, PA, a daughter Barbara R. Frengs of Norman, Oklahoma, a brother Francis Coons of Pawtucket, R.I., two sisters Pollyann Smith of Great Barrington and Martha Matzko of Torrington, CT and six grandchildren. Funeral Services and Interment for Philip A. Conns will be private. No Calling hours. Donations in his memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad or the Fairview Hospital Development Fund C/O HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
