Herberta Mae Litchfield

Herberta Mae Litchfield, 79, of 608 Hodge Road, Summerville, S.C., formerly of Hinsdale, died yesterday morning at Trident Regional Medical Center in North Charleston, S.C. Born in Chesterfield on May 11, 1923, daughter of Fred and Alice Duverger Tirrell, she attended schoolsin Massachusetts. She moved to South Carolina in 1984 and, after the death of her husband, Elmer L. Litchfield, April 16, 1985, returned to Hinsdale. She moved back to South Carolina in 1989. Mrs. Litchfield was a nurses' aide at Curtis Manor Nursing Home in Dalton, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Jedburg (S.C.) Baptist Church and enjoyed reading and cooking. She and her husband were married June 2, 1937. She leaves 10 sons, George Litchfield of Pittsfield, Arthur Litchfield of Cheshire, Edward Litchfield of Albuquerque, N.M., Elmer Litchfield of Peru, Maurice Litchfield of Dalton, Peter Litchfield of Wilbraham, and Paul Litchfield, Carl Litchfield, Richard Litchfield and Ross Litchfield, all of Hinsdale; six daughters, Patricia Tallberg and Rebecca Litchfield, both of Hinsdale, Deborah Girard of Stephentown, N.Y., Robin Litchfield of Pittsfield, and Jane Cahalan, with whom she resided, and Marjorie Litchfield, both of Summerville; a brother, Merwin "Whimp" Tirrell of Colrain; 67 grandchildren, and 61 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Smith, and three sons, Leon Litchfield, and infants John and Louis Litchfield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A remembrance service for Herberta Litchfield will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, at 6 at First Congregational Church in Hinsdale. A memorial service and burial will be held June 2 at Maple Street Cemetery in Hinsdale, a date chosen by her surviving children to reunite her and her late husband on a day they had chosen to be bonded together in this life. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1833, Merrifield, VA 22116. She will be remembered as a Berkshire County legend for having given birth to 20 children, 16 of whom were born at the former Pittsfield General Hospital. Her loss is felt deeply among her surviving children, as well as among the many people who also called her "Mom." She opened her home to many of her children's friends and companions, treating them with the same love and comfort she gave her own.
