George A. O’Brien

George A. O’Brien, 94, formerly of 55 Holden St., died Friday at North Adams Commons, where he had resided since 1984. Born in North Adams on July 16, 1909, son of George and Olive Beaupre O’Brien, he was educated in local schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. O’Brien was employed by the former Florini’s Italian Gardens Restaurant, retiring when it ceased operations. He had also worked at other area diners, including Noel’s, Pedercini’s and DiLego’s. In his earlier years, he had worked at the former Melanson Shoe Co. and the former Olympian Bowling Alleys. A longtime champion bowler, he was active in Berkshire County leagues and the Western Massachusetts Bowling League, which was considered the best league in Massachusetts at the time. He was a member of the former Cramer’s Market Bowling League, which won the championship in candlepin bowling in 1934-1935. Mr. O’Brien was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis’ Church and a member and past president of the Lebanese Social Club. His wife, the former Mary “Mae” Shakar, whom he married Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1940, in St. Francis’ Church, died March 25, 1963. He leaves his caregiver and nephew, Richard Shaker of Pittsfield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for George O’Brien will be Friday, July 25, at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall Ave., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 9:30 until the time of the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested through the funeral home. Survivors also include his brothers-in-law, David Shaker and John Shakar, both of North Adams.
