Lois E. O'Brien

Lois E. O'Brien, 71, of Dewey Way died yesterday at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center. Born in Great Barrington on Aug. 24, 1932, daughter of George A. and Helen Mae Maston Race, she attended the former Searles High School. She had been a longtime resident of West Sheffield Road. Mrs. O'Brien was employed as a kindergarten bus aide until the late 1980s. She also had worked at the former Pines Nursing Home, now Timberlyn Heights, in Great Barrington during the 1970s, and made felt hats at the woolen mill in Southfield and sewed linens at the former Great Barrington Manufacturing Co. She had been a member of Sheffield Chapel for three years, and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidery, needlepoint and playing cards. She also enjoyed walking, and was known by many as the "champion walker." Her husband, Lawrence A. O'Brien, whom she married Dec. 2, 1950, died March 28, 1991. She leaves five sons, James A. O'Brien of Bentonville, Maine, Robert G. O'Brien and Gary C. O'Brien, both of Guilford, Maine, Lawrence A. O'Brien Jr. of Housatonic and Patrick J. O'Brien of East Otis; three daughters, Lynn M. Clouser and Cathy J. Clouser, both of Sheffield, and Mae F. Davis of Ashley Falls; a sister, Betty Sinico of Great Barrington; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Dianna O'Brien, died in 2001. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Lois E. O'Brien of Sheffield, who died Nov. 22, 2003, will be conducted Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 11 at Sheffield Chapel by Rev. Chet Howe, pastor. The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 24, from 4 until 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. Most of all, she cherished the time spent with her family.
