Alsha Elmendorf

Alsha Elmendorf, 86, of Delmar, N.Y., died Sunday at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y., after a brief illness. She was the mother of Donna Elmendorf of Stockbridge. Born in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 13, 1916, daughter of Lee T. and Alsha Meehan McCourt, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Donna Monteserrat McCourt, after the death of her mother. She attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Mrs. Elmendorf was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Delmar and served on its Altar Guild. She enjoyed handcrafts, especially knitting and sewing, giving most of what she made to charity. She and her husband, John W. Elmendorf, enjoyed outdoor pursuits, especially fishing and boating. Her husband, whom she married Feb. 14, 1936, died Nov. 5. Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Lee Elmendorf of Latham, N.Y., and four grandsons. Another son, Andrew David Elmendorf, is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Alsha Elmendorf, who died Dec. 7, 2003, will be Thursday, Dec. 1, at 10 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Elsmere Avenue, Delmar, N.Y. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 3:30 to 6 at APPLEBEE FUNERAL HOME, Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berkshire Country Day School, Lenox, Mass. She also leaves her son-in-law, Dr. Edward Shapiro of Stockbridge; her daughter-in-law, Heidi of Latham; her four grandsons, Trevor, Joshua, Zachary and Jacob, and a niece and two grandnieces. Alsha was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
