Nicholas J. Polydouris

Nicholas J. Polydouris, 90, of Albany, N.Y., died Friday at home. He was the brother of Alice Metropoulos of Pittsfield. He was born in Kalamata, Greece, and then moved to Nashua, N.H., then to Glens Falls, N.Y. During World War II he was a radio personality for stations WGEO and WGEA short-wave radio. He was a member of the Greek American Democratic Club and secretary for Greek war relief in the Albanyarea during the war. In 1939, he moved to Albany, where he taught Greek at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church. He also owned Tri-City Liquors of Menands for about 20 years, after which he retired. He had previously owned the Albany Linen Service for about 20 years. He was a member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, where he was on the parish council and was executive director of the church during the 1940s. He was a member of the Albany chapter 140 Ahepa for 65 years, and held all of the offices and was twice president of the organization. He also belonged to Mount Vernon Lodge 3 F&AM. He leaves his wife of 50 years, Christine Thomas Polydouris. Besides his sister, he also leaves a son, John Polydouris of Albany. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral service for Nicholas J. Polydouris will be Saturday at 10 at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road, Albany. Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 at the TEBBUTT FUNERAL HOME, 633 Central Ave., Albany. A Trisagion Memorial Service will be held Friday at 7:30. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albany following the funeral. Those who wish may make contributions to St. Sophia's Church (Polydouris Icon of St. Nicholas Fund). Survivors include seven nieces, Janice Kostopoulos of Marblehead, Matina Metropoulos of Pittsfield, Constance Welch of Marblehead, Stacey Kirby of Billerica, Leslie Beauregard of West Newbury, Efthemia Vafiades of Amexi, Greece, and Fay Stavrides of Athens, Greece; three nephews, Dr. William Metropoulos of Springfield, Damon Thomas Esq. of Haverhill and John Polydouris, AG, of Stephanos, Greece; six grandnephews, Andrew, George, Nicholas, Fotini and Politimi Polydouris and Spiros Stavrides, all of Greece, and one grandniece, Katerina Stavrides, also of Greece.
