Francis Russell Alderman

Francis Russell Alderman, 95, of 615 North Eagle St. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Nov. 27. Born in North Adams on Nov. 25, 1908, son of Franklin H. and Anne Gagnon Alderman, he was educated in North Adams school, including Drury High School. Mr. Alderman was a carpenter, foreman and superintendent in the construction field until his retirement in 1973. He was employed for 15 years with Carroll, Verge and Whipple Construction and served as superintendent of construction at the Gabriel Abbott School in the town of Florida during the 1950s. He also served as superintendent of construction of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink in North Adams in the early 1970s. He had been a carpenter's apprentice during the building of the North Adams Armory. He had first worked at the former H.W. Clark Biscuit Co. in North Adams and with GE in Pittsfield. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of North Adams. He also was a member of the Carpenter's Union Local 260 of Pittsfield, the former Greylock Lodge of Masons AF&AM in North Adams, the Bennington (Vt.) Club and the Shrewsbury (Vt.) Snowmobile Club. He was very active with the Clarksburg Senior Citizen's Club and enjoyed hunting, fly fishing and planting trees for conservation. A dowser, he assisted many local families in finding water sources. His first wife, the former Anna Ciempa, whom he married July 8, 1927, in Petersburg, N.Y., died Jan. 10, 1973. He and his wife, the former Marilyn Shirley Willette Gorman, were married March 17, 1978, in Pownal, Vt. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Dorothy DiLorenzo of North Adams; a stepdaughter, Kathleen Gillis of Framingham; two stepsons, Michael J. Gorman and James M. Gorman, both of Pownal; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- At Mr. Francis Alderman's request, there will be no funeral nor calling hours. Burial will take place in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. The omission of flowers is requested. Donations in his memory are suggested for the Clarksburg Senior Citizens Center or a charity of the donor's choice through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include two grandchildren, Mary Pat LeClair of North Adams and Michael DiLorenzo of Phoenix, N.Y., two great-grandchildren, Christina DiLorenzo and Michael DiLorenzo of Phoenix. He was predeceased by great-granddaughter, Jocelyn E. LeClair, on Aug. 18, 2001; a sister, Ethel Dunlop, and three brothers, Leon, Ralph and Walter Alderman.
