Gerald A. LaVigne

Gerald A. LaVigne, 79, of 3 Myrtle St. died yesterday at home. Born in Clinton on March 18, 1924, son of Arthur J. and Anne Marie Whalen LaVigne, his family moved to Adams when he was 9 and he attended schools here, graduating from the former Adams High School after his military service. A decorated Navy veteran of World War II, he served with the 129th Bomber Squadron in the South Pacific and flew 63 nighttime missions. He also was stationed in Brazil and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as an aviation radioman, first class. Mr. LaVigne retired from the former Waverly Products. He also had been employed by the former Arnold Print Works and Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates, and the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. After retiring, he worked part time at the Convenient Store. He was a communicant of Notre Dame-St. Thomas Parish, a past commander of the Burnette-Bednarz Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of American Legion Post 160. He was recording secretary for the Greylock Glen Now Club and a member of the Flat Earth Society. He was a fan of the Red Sox and the Philadelphia Eagles. He and his wife, the former Lorraine F. Gibeau, were married Sept. 24, 1949, in St. Francis' Church in North Adams. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Mark G. LaVigne of Cheshire; a daughter, Gayle Silvestri of West Chester, Pa., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Gerald A. "Gerry" LaVigne, who died Dec. 16, 2003, will be offered Saturday at 10 in Notre Dame Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. Calling hours at McBRIDE FUNERAL HOME will be Friday from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory to the charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home. Survivors include his daughter-n-law, Diane P. LaVigne; his son-in-law, Daniel Silvestri; two grandchildren, Gina Marie and David M. Tomasini, and his father- and mother-in-law, Kenneth and Exilda Suprenant.
