John Francis Baumann

John Francis Baumann, 74, of Division Street died Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Fairview Hospital. Born Jan. 1, 1929, in Pittsfield, son of George and Louise Maier Baumann, he attended local schools and graduated from the former Searles High School. He was an active Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout badge. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Jan. 26, 1948 and served during the Korean War, where he was stationed on the aircraft carriers USS Leyte and the USS Coral Sea until being honorably discharged on Jan. 25, 1952. He retired from the Mead Paper Corp. in the early 1990s, where he had worked as a boiler operator engineer for over 20 years. For a brief period when he was younger he had worked as a television repairman. After he retired, he enjoyed working around his house. He was an outdoorsman and spent time fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking and built many birdhouses for family and friends. He was a past member of the James A. Modolo Post 8348 American Legion. His wife, the former Rita Higgins, predeceased him. He leaves two sons, Henry Baumann of Great Barrington and John Baumann of Boston; a daughter, Darla Baumann Gen-nari of Great Barrington; five brothers, Paul Baumann of Housatonic, George Baumann of Lenox, Joseph Baumann of Yarmouthport, Gerald Baumann of Lee and M. Peter Baumann of Great Barrington; four sisters, Ann Costa of Great Barrington, Joan Clark of Matthews, N.C., and Patricia Ciolina and Mary Whitback, both of Salisbury, Conn., and five grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for John Francis Baumann will be held Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at 11 at the FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Daniel Papineau, MIC, officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of the Valley Cemetery in Sheffield. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Dec. 28, from 2 until 5 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire children's Health Program, the Mead Children's Trust Fund or the Housatonic Hose Company through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Mr. Baumann also leaves five grandchildren, Sheena, Christopher, Andrew, Cameron and Elizabeth Gennari and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, James A. Baumann, Thomas W.
