George J. Gop

George J. Gop, 92, of 9 Ryan Terrace, Housatonic, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Housatonic on Jan. 9, 1912, son of Anthony and Maryann Pajak Gop, he was educated in local schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Florida for two years. Mr. Gop was a machine tender for the former Mead Corp. in Lee, now MeadWestvaco, retiring Feb. 1, 1977, after 16 years there. Before that, he worked for the former Monument Mills and then for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. He was a communicant of All Saints Church, a member of its Holy Name Sodality and a church collector. He enjoyed traveling, especially to California and Hawaii. He and his wife, the former Helen T. Miller Lesniak, were married July 21, 1973, in All Saints Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a stepdaughter, Ann Louise McCasland of Middletown, N.Y.; two brothers, Stanley Gop of Lee and Harry Gop of Millerton, N.Y., and a stepgranddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for George J. Gop, who died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, will be tomorrow, Feb. 24, at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at All Saints Church by the Rev. Anthony Jutt, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Family will receive friends today, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Mr. Gop's memory may be made to the Housatonic Hose Company in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Survivors include his stepson-in-law, John McCasland of Middletown; his stepgranddaughter, Marnie McCasland, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Edward and Joseph, and two sisters, Ann Mitchell and Alice Eckert.
