Bradford O. Smith

Bradford O. Smith, 91, of Reservoir Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in New Haven, Vt., on March 27, 1912, son of Bradford J. and Lucy M. Swenor Smith, he was a descendent of Col. Jonathan Smith of Lanesboro. His family moved to Lee when he was a child, and he was educated in Lee schools. Mr. Smith worked at the former Smith Paper Co. from 1928 until retiring as a foreman from its successor, Kimberly-Clark Corp., in 1976. He also operated Smith Lumber Co. and Smith Saw Mill on his property on Reservoir Road for many years. He was a skilled woodworker and cabinetmaker, and held licenses as a construction supervisor, hoisting engineer and journeyman pipe fitter. He was a member of Evening Star Lodge AF&AM. His wife, the former Thelma M. Welch, whom he married April 23, 1932, died Sept. 22, 2000. He leaves two daughters, Cynthia G. Smith of Lee and Donna L. Morawiec of Lee; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Bradford O. Smith, who died March 6, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, March 9, at 10 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Stanley Wooley, rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in South Lee. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be tonight from 5 to 8. Members of Evening Star Lodge will meet at the lodge tonight at 7 to proceed to the funeral home for a Masonic service at 7:30. Friends wishing to do so may make donations to the Lee Elementary School Library in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238. Survivors include Mr. Smith's grandsons, Thomas O. and James M. Morawiec; his great-grandchildren, Bradford and Lydia Morawiec, his son-in-law, Thomas P. Morawiec, and his granddaughter-in-law, Kathleen Morawiec. He was predeceased by his brothers, Otto and Azena Smith, and his sisters, Eva Tucker, Urah Torrey and Mildred and Roah Smith.
