Henry Eugene "Pop" Dargie

Henry Eugene "Pop" Dargie, 75, of 1774 East Road died Wednesday at home. Born in Adams, Mass., on March 25, 1929, son of Henri and Eva Royal Dargie, he was educated in Adams schools. An Air Force veteran, he enlisted in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1950. He served as a military police officer and was once assigned to Gen. Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in Japan. In 1954, Mr. Dargie and his mother established the former Homestead Rest Home in North Adams, Mass., which he operated for 37 years. He and his wife, the former Joan DiLego, also owned and operated the former Colonial Restaurant on the Mohawk Trail in North Adams. After retiring in 1993, he became the cook for the Stamford Elementary School lunch program. He had first worked for Crowley Milk Co. In his younger years, he was named an honorary Berkshire County sheriff after assisting with the apprehension of two burglary suspects. He maintained a small farm at his home, and enjoyed gardening and caring for his many animals. He also enjoyed attending Saratoga Raceway in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was known for his cooking skills, especially his authentic French pork pies. He also enjoyed prospecting for gold and discovered a gold nugget within five minutes of panning while on a California expedition in 2002. He and his wife were married April 21, 1957. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Mark Dargie of Duluth, Minn., Christopher Dargie of Stamford and James Dargie of North Hills, Calif.; three daughters, Pamela Costine and Cynthia Lamore of Stamford, and Mary Beverly of Clarksburg, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Dargie of Cheshire, Mass., and Francis Dargie of North Adams, and a sister, Dorothy Messier of Hampden, Mass.; seven grandchildren, and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Henry Eugene Dargie died April 21, 2004, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, April 24, at 4 at Stamford Community (Vt.) Church, Main Road, by the Rev. William Wilson, pastor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Stamford Elementary School Activity Fund. Mr. Dargie had treasured his job at the school because of his affection for children. He also leaves two daughters-in-law, Nancy Jepson Dargie and Robin Bartolomeo Dargie; two sons-in-law, Robert W. Lamore and Glenn Beverly; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Lamore and Jessica Lamore Bugbee and her husband, David H. Bugbee, Jennifer and Stephen Beverly, Megan and Alex Dargie, and Sophia Lilikoi Dargie; a great-grandson, Matthew David Bugbee, and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Rita Dupee, two brothers, Arthur Paul Dargie and George Dargie, and a son-in-law, Robert Costine, are deceased.
