Joseph Carmody

Joseph Edward Carmody, 75, of 1009 Peck's Road died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on July 12, 1925, son of John T. and Elise B. Bourquin Carmody, he was a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He received his associate's degree in engineering from Lowell Technical Institute in the 1950s. An Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the Elite Mars Task Force. He was employed as a construction engineer for the commonwealth of Massachusetts for 36 years, retiring in 1987. A communicant of St. Mark's Church, Mr. Carmody was a member of its parish council, parish finance and bingo committees, and assisted with the food pantry services there. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Carmody received a citation from former Gov. Michael S. Dukakis for outstanding service to the commonwealth. He enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, bird watching, crosswords and working on puzzles. He was an avid reader and history buff. He leaves his wife, the former Lucille B. Lusignan, whom he married Sept. 12, 1953; a son, Paul J. Carmody of Letterkenny, Ireland; four daughters, Anne L. Molloy of Bridgewater, Kathleen M. Sinico of Pittsfield, Cecilia C. Shea of Dalton and Jayne E. Shogry of New Milford, Conn.; two brothers, John T. Carmody Jr. of Sun City, Ariz., and Cornelius J. Carmody of Castleton, Vt., and 10 grandchildren. Services will be Thursday at 10:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Mark's Church, celebrated by the Rev. James Carmody, pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Church, Worcester, cousin of Mr. Carmody. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours at Dery Funeral Home will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mark's Food Pantry in care of the funeral home. Mr. Carmody is survived by six grandsons and four granddaughters, and four sons-in-law, William A. Molloy, Anthony J. Sinico Jr., William R. Shea and Louis M. Shogry III.
