Helen E. Dean

Helen E. Dean, 76, formerly of Curtis Manor, died yesterday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Haverhill on Sept. 14, 1924, daughter of William L. and Elizabeth Cahill Phair, she was a 1942 graduate of Haverhill High School. She came to Pittsfield shortly after graduation. She was first employed at Berkshire Life Insurance Co. and later with the former Beloit Corp. She was recently employed at various dress shops, including the former Mary Wentworth's and Sally Dean Dress Shop. Mrs. Dean attended St. Joseph's Church. She enjoyed the beach, playing cards with her friends, and the Colonial Gardens pool. Very active in AA, she spoke at many of the group's functions and was supportive of her friends in the program. She was an avid fan of the Red Sox. She leaves a son, N. Kevin "Chip" Dean of Pittsfield; a daughter, Sarah J. "Sally" Dean-Dowd of Pittsfield; four brothers, John L. Phair of Framingham, W. Kevin Phair, Michael J. Phair and Thomas J. Phair, all of Pittsfield; three sisters, Joan P. Hickingbotham of Rocky Hill, Conn., Jane P. Volin and Margaret L. Johnson, both of Palm City, Fla.; and a granddaughter. Her sister, Mary E. Keir, died in 1993. Calling hours at the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Sunday from 3 to 6. Funeral services will be Monday at 8:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Jimmy Fund of Berkshire County in care of the funeral home.
