Francis X. O'Neil

Francis X. O'Neil, 77, of 61 1/2 Orchard St. died Monday evening at home. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 2, 1923, son of Thomas F. and Jennie Burns O'Neil, he attended local schools, including St. Joseph's Central High School. He then enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps., initially in Gardner and later at the camp on the Mo-hawk Trail. Mr. O'Neil was first employed by the Maurice Callahan Sign Co. He then was employed as a lens grinder with American Callahan Sign Co. from 1948 to 1959, and by Robert Deloye Surveyors as member of the line crew, performing municipal surveying. He retired due to ill health. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. An award-winning artist in both acrylics and oils, he was recognized by the Kent (Conn.) Chamber of Commerce, the Sheffield Art League, and the Academic Artists Association of Springfield. His work was exhibited by the Lenox Library, the Pittsfield Artisans and the Downtown Associates. He leaves a brother, John J. O'Neil of Pittsfield. He is also survived by his nephews. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, with the Rev. Michael A. Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday morning at the funeral home, beginning at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Pittsfield Artisans in care of the funeral home.
