Joseph Shurkus Sr.

Joseph P. Shurkus Sr., 73, of 3 May St. died Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. Born in Cambridge on April 29, 1928, son of Dominic and Domincella Winchus Shurkus, he graduated from high school in Nutley, N.J., and attended a machinists' school in Boston. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Shurkus was employed by GE as a machinist for 38 years. He retired in 1988. Before that, he worked at a woolen mill in Dalton. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Pensioners' clubs. He enjoyed bowling and watching the Red Sox. He and his wife, the former Rose Gokey, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept. 15. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Donna Ostellino of Pittsfield; a son, Joseph P. Shurkus Jr. of Southington, Conn.; a sister, Helen Crandall of Franklin, and a grandson. Services will be Wednesday at 8:45 from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Ann's Church in Lenox celebrated by the Rev. John J. Bonzagni, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Association, both in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
