Julian Szpila

Julian Szpila, 82, of 380 Old Columbia St. died early yesterday morning at Williamstown Commons Care Centers in Williamstown. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 29, 1922, son of Joseph and Catherine Rymarski Szpila, he moved with his family to Adams, where he attended schools, including St. Stanislaus School. An Army veteran of World War II, he was as a half-track driver and served in the Central and Northern European Theater, including Normandy. Mr. Szpila was employed by GE in Pittsfield as a fork-lift operator for 16 years, retiring in 1985. Earlier, he had worked at the former Berkshire Mills and Arnold Print Works. He was a communicant of the Parishes of Notre Dame/St. Thomas and St. Stanislaus. He was a member of the Adams Post 160 American Legion. He enjoyed target practice and riding his motorcycle. He and his wife, the former Lucille Gelineau, were married Feb. 9, 1946. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Ronald Szpila of Stow and Steven Szpila of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; three daughters, Jeanne Millette of Palm Beach Garden, Fla., Denise Desanty of Savoy and Cynthia Daunais of Adams; two sisters, Martha Bobowiec of North Carolina and Irene Gentes of Cheshire, six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Julian Szpila will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at 11 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, celebrated by the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parishes of Notre Dame/St. Thomas and St. Stanislaus. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Church Meals Fund through the TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, which is in charge of arrangements. He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene Szpila.
