Matilda Villanova

Matilda I. Main Villanova, 81, formerly of 10 Union Court Apartments, 10 Union St., died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided at Laurel Lake Assisted Living in Lee for a year and a half. Born in Pittsfield on March 14, 1920, daughter of Mazei and Anna Wichiozka Banus, she graduated from Pittsfield High School and from the University of Massachusetts, where she received her bachelor's degree in education. Mrs. Villanova taught school for the Pittsfield Public School System for several years, retiring at the age of 62. Before that, she was employed as a waitress at various local restaurants for many years. She was a SHARE volunteer and received the Berkshire Prevention Alliance Community Recognition Award on Jan. 30, 1998. She enjoyed reading, knitting and raising African violets. Her first husband, William Leeds Main, is deceased. She leaves a son, William Main of Hudson; a daughter, Carol A. Thompson of Pittsfield; a sister, Anna Darling of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow at 11 at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, with the Rev. James K. Joyce, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow morning from 10 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or the Berkshire Athenaeum, both in care of the funeral home.
