Charles H. Logan

Charles Hollister Logan, 96, formerly of Pittsfield, died Monday at Barnwell Nursing Facility, Valatie, N.Y., where he had been a resident for four years. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 13, 1904, son of John and Bertha Persip Logan, he attended local schools. He had also resided in Canaan, N.Y., and Cheshire before moving to Valatie 10 years ago. Mr. Logan was employed as a building superintendent and as a custodian for the Berkshire Eagle for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1986. He also worked at Berkshire Life Insurance Co., the former Pittsfield Electric Power House and at GE during World War II. He played saxophone for 50 years at many local venues, including the former Lakeview Restaurant, with the Dixie Serenaders, a dance band that disbanded in the late 1970s. He was a former member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 109. His first wife, the former Florence Jones, died in 1927. He and his wife, the former Edith M. Kerr, celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary Jan. 22. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Marjorie Caesar of Pittsfield, Charlotte Williams of St. Albans, N.Y., and Barbara Logan-Brown of Valatie; two sons, Charles H. Logan Jr. of Valatie and Darrell Logan of Rotterdam, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. There will be no funeral services and cremation will take place. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Christian Center in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
