CHARLES L. GRAVEL

Charles L. Gravel, 79, of Clayton Road, Ashley Falls, died Saturday at Geer Nursing Center in Canaan, Conn. Born in Leominster on July 19, 1921, son of Charles H. and Elizabeth DeBlois Gravel, he grew up in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School. He also graduated from Bentley School of Accounting. After the war, he graduated from Harvard University with high honors in physics. He also did graduate work at Williams College and at Boston University. A veteran of World War II, he served as a radioman in the Navy's air force and saw action in the European theater with Patrol Squadron 63. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Gravel was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co., Raytheon in Boston and Kulite Semiconductor Products in Ridgefield, N.J., where he served as vice president in charge of research and development until retiring in 1990. Prior to the war, he worked for Ludlow Co. in Ludlow. He and his wife, the former Millicent J. Sanford, were married Nov. 28, 1949 in Cambridge. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Charles Gravel of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Marsha Altemus of Ashley Falls and Nadine Laughlin of Nelson, N.H.; a sister, Rita Wilson of Leesburg, Fla., and seven grandchildren. Charles L. Gravel, 79, of Clayton Road, Ashley Falls, and formerly of River Edge, N.J., died Dec. 30, 2000, at Geer Nursing Center in Canaan, Conn. The funeral will be private. Memorial donations in Mr. Gravel's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation in care of FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
