Edith Smith, 89

HANCOCK, Mass. - Edith Smith, 89, of 2074 Hancock Road died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Canaan, N.H., on Sept. 25, 1922, a daughter of Arthur and Maude McKeiven Watson, she graduated from Canaan High School in 1940 and moved to Dalton that fall. Mrs. Smith was employed in the payroll department of the foremr GE Plastics in Pittsfield for many years. She also worked at the 1896 Motel in Williamstown for several years and reported on Hancock news for the North Adams Transcript for 11 years. She was an active member of Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown, serving as the church clerk for 10 years and a member of the Dorcas Society. She also was a member of the Richard A Ruether Post 152 American Legion Auxiliary for many years, of the Missions Committee and, for nine years, of the Hancock Historical Committee. She enjoyed square dancing, knitting, gardening, drawing, crocheting and crossword puzzles. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. She and her husband, John C. Smith Jr., whom she married in 1942, and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this August. Besides her husband, she leaves one son, Robert Smith and his wife, Susan Keeney Smith, of Hancock; four daughters, Carol Morrison and her husband, Robert, of Pownal, Vt., Cathy LeBarron and her husband, Paul, of Lanesborough, Nancy Hamilton and her husband, Paul, of Pittsfield and Susan Tetreault and her husband, Philip, of McCool Junction, Neb.; a brother, Charles Watson and his wife, Barbara, of Kennett, Mo.; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her daughter Barbara Jean Smith in 1950 and by her brothers Earl and Kenneth Watson. FUNERAL NOTICE - Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be celebrated Monday, April 2, at 11 from Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown. Burial will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday, April 1, from 2 to 5 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for Second Congregational Church through the funeral home.
