Warriors Strike First, but Mounties Prevail
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After not giving up a goal in its first four games, the Mount Greylock boys' soccer team probably wasn't expecting to be behind so quickly in its match against Wahconah on Monday. But after the Warriors' Nick Montferret scored on a header three and half minutes into the game, it was a reality the Mounties had to come to terms with it fast.Greylock ended up trailing Wahconah for all of six minutes, quickly tying the game in the 10th minute thanks to a goal by sophomore Eric Hirsch. Blair Dils' squad went on to score two more goals before halftime, and the defense never faltered again as the undefeated Mounties pulled away for a 4-1 win at home.
"Wahconah jumped on us early with a clean header off a corner kick," Dils said. "We had a defensive breakdown, but Montferret's finish was clean and well deserved. The boys didn't panic, though. We played composed soccer and scored a nice goal from a great feed from Nathan [Majumder] to a sliding Eric Hirsch. Eric is quietly getting the job done up top as Ian Brink continues to play himself back into form."
Majumder's pass to Hirsch to set up Greylock's first goal was a sign of things to come the rest of the game. The senior captain had his feet on the final three goals for the Mounties (5-0), finishing the day with two goals and two assists. He scored off of pass from eighth-grader Felix Kershaw to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute and later assisted on sophomore Grant Raphael's tally five minutes before halftime.
Majumder then put Wahconah (3-2-2) away in the 71st minute, scoring his ninth goal of the season off a pass from senior defender Keath Machado.
"Nathan gave them fits all day," Dils said. "His smoothness on the ball and his bursts of speed were just too much for their backs to handle. He's playing great soccer right now."
Dils said David Majetich had a good day on the defensive end for Greylock, while senior goalie Sean Houston made four saves to earn the win in net. Although he allowed his first goal of the season, Houston is still only allowing 0.2 goals per game through the first five matches.
"Going into the game, we were well aware Wahconah was unbeaten in league play," Dils said. "We were extremely pleased to get the result today after conceding a goal early."
The Mounties next play at Hampden Charter at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Warriors also play that day with a game at Southwick at 4:15.
