McCann Tech Falls to St. Mary's
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Tech girls soccer team Monday fell to St. Mary’s in its regular-season finale, 3-0.
Coming off back-to-back draws, McCann (6-3-5) looked to close the season on a high note but ran into a tough St. Mary’s (13-2) squad. The visitors dominated possession early, pressing hard against McCann’s back line. The Hornets held strong through the opening 10 minutes, but the pressure eventually broke.
In the 17th minute, St. Mary’s broke through with a run up the sideline, cutting inside and lofting a shot off the post and in. Two more goals followed within three minutes — one a curling strike from the left side, the other a quick one-two passing play up the middle that ended with a low finish under the keeper’s dive. It was a tough five-minute stretch, but McCann held on to reach halftime without further damage.
Despite the rain, McCann came out stronger in the second half, pushing the tempo and creating its best chances of the game. Shaylee Lawson nearly pulled one back after beating her defender for a one-on-one look, but her shot lacked the power to beat the keeper.
“We adjusted to their formation and made some critical changes going into this game,” McCann head coach Lindsay Lincoln said. “At halftime we focused on containing the ball and limiting outside shots. That’s where most of their goals came from. Offensively, we looked for quick passing and give-and-go plays, which helped open up chances.”
McCann’s adjustments paid off, holding St. Mary’s scoreless in the second half before the match was cut short due to weather. The Hornets controlled more of the ball and looked sharper going forward, while goalkeeper Bella Lefevre made several key saves to keep the score intact.
McCann finishes the regular season with just three losses, two to St. Mary’s. The Hornets now turn their attention to the Western Massachusetts tournament. The seedings will be released on Tuesday.
“We feel confident, but we need to start faster and score early to avoid playing from behind,” Lincoln said. “This team is resilient, and we’ll be ready for the playoffs.”
