One Mistake Costs Hornets in State Voc. Game

CANTON, Mass. -- The McCann Tech girls' soccer team traveled clear across the state for its state vocational game against top-seeded Blue Hills Tech on Wednesday. It was a trip that would have been worth it had it not been for a fateful two seconds late in the first half.

The Warriors used a deep throw-in with the clock running down to score the game's only goal with just two seconds remaining before halftime. Shardae Lobo finished off a pass from Meg Deladorta to beat the fourth-seeded Hornets 1-0 and knock them out of the four-team field.

Mike Dowling's club had its chances in the second half, but couldn't convert the equalizer against Blue Hills goalie Melissa Varitimos, who collected eight saves on her way to picking up the shutout. Senior keeper Becky Daniels made 14 saves for McCann, which fell to 12-6-1 with the loss.

The good news for the Hornets is they have at least one more game to play. McCann drew the No. 7 seed in the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament and will open up against No. 2 Granby (12-2-3) at 2 p.m. on Monday.
