GRANBY, Mass. -- The McCann Tech girls' soccer team drew a tough opponent in the opening round of the Division 3 Western Mass. tournament on Monday. Granby, which drew the No. 2 seed in the bracket after finishing the year with a record of 12-2-3, flexed its muscles against the No. 7 Hornets, scoring four times in each half on its way to an 8-0 win at home.

McCann finishes the season with a record of 12-7-1 and a share of the Tri-County League title.

It was a tough way for the season to end for Mike Dowling's club, which gave up three goals in the first 20 minutes of play to fall behind early. Junior Mary Nguyen, who was the Hornets' leading scorer this year with 17 goals and seven assists, had her team's best chance to score in the 10th minute of the game, but her shot from the top of the goal box was turned away by Rams' goalie Abby Hurlbut, who made seven saves in the game to earn the shutout.

Rachel Mick netted a hat trick for the hosts, which also got a pair of tallies from Kate Desonnier in the win. After going into halftime with a 4-0 lead, the Rams put the game away for good by scoring twice within the first four minutes of play in the second half.

Senior keeper Becky Daniels ended her McCann career by making 19 saves in goal. Sophomore Alex Wood came on in relief, though, and made six stops to finish out the game. The end of the season marked the end of a successful campaign for Daniels, who made an impressive 177 saves in 20 games this season. That effort was good enough for just under nine saves per game.
