Greylock Struggles to Put Away Everett

SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- Melissa Swann's goal off of a feed from junior Alexa Adams with three minutes remaining finally gave the Mount Greylock girls' soccer team the extra cushion it needed to earn a 2-0 win over Mount Everett on Monday.

Despite a 26-6 advantage in shots in the game, the Mounties (5-1-2) couldn't put away the pesky Eagles (1-4) until Swann notched the first varsity goal of her career. A swinger who plays for both the Greylock and JV teams, Swann made the most of her opportunties in a game where her team was struggling to score goals.

"This game was a classic case of underestimating our opponent and not playing up to our ability," Mounties head coach Tom Ostheimer said. "This was also a pyrrhic victory, as we lost Alex Majetich to a knee injury."

While Ostheimer wasn't pleased with his team's overall performance, he did appreciate the efforts of Adams, who played solid defense and gave Greylock a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal just before halftime. Junior goalie Margot Besnard made five saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season, while Sam Hoover stopped 19 shots in goal for Everett.

The Mounties next host an undefeated Lenox club at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
