Monument Rallies to Take Down Drury
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — There were some good things to point to in the Drury girls' soccer team's season opener against Monument Mountain on Thursday and although the Blue Devils drew first blood, it was the Spartans who got the last laugh in a 3-1 win at home.Drury junior Cori Ghidotti, who led her team with 11 goals last season, got the Blue Devils off to a strong start by scoring off of a breakaway nine minutes into the game. The hosts quickly tied things up when Ashley Harrington finished off a pass from Haley Korte two and a half minutes later.
The game remained tied until early in the second half, when Emma Carchedi scored off of a feed from Courtney Freedman to give Monument a 2-1 lead nine minutes after halftime. Led by the strong play of sweeper Danielle Racette, Drury kept it a one-goal game until the 77th minute, when Freedman sealed the win for the Spartans with an unassisted tally.
"We played well offensively for the first half but lagged a little in the second half," Blue Devils head coach Molly Meczywor said. "We were getting beat to several key 50/50 balls. That being said, I though our possession play was very impressive."
Senior goalkeeper Ali Tatro was solid net for Drury, finishing with 14 saves on the day. The Blue Devils return to action with a home game against rival Hoosac Valley at 4 p.m. on Monday.
