Mount Greylock Boys, Girls Down Drury

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — You may have thought Friday's weather was cool, damp and not particularly present.

You probably are not a a track and field athlete.

"I think there was a lot of progression for our kids today in great conditions," Mount Greylock girls coach Brian Gill said. "These are great conditions to run. It's perfect."

And was a great day for both the Mount Greylock girls and boys, who beat Drury by scores of 89-52 and 109-50, respectively.

For the girls, Jenna Phelps was a triple winner, taking first in the 100 meters in a time of 13.2 seconds, and the 200 meters in 27.3 and clearing 4 feet, 6 inches to take first in the high jump.

"There were some good races," Gill said. "I think we had a big breakthrough in the high jump with a couple of girls making attempts at 4-8, which is a big deal. Melissa Swann in the mile was a big result for her.

"She's been trying to break that 6-minute barrier and just hasn't gotten the right race conditions. But that 5:48 today was fantastic. It gets her to Western Mass."

Swann beat out Drury's Cellene Koperek by one second to take first in the mile.

Drury's best performance on the girls side was turned in by hurdler Alyssa Marceau, who won the 100 in 16.75 and the 400 in 1:13.5.

In the boys competition, Mount Greylock's Tommy Kirby won the mile (4:50) and the two-mile run (10:17). Ryan Benoit won the discus (107-9.5) and the long jump (17-3.75). Nick Dastoli won the 400 hurdles (1:07.1) and javelin (104-10).

Drury's Sully Boland won the 100 (12.1) and the high jump (5-0). Matt Scanlon won the shot put (37-1) for the Blue Devils to prevent a Mount Greylock sweep in the throws.

The team competition in the boys meet was never really close on either side with Mount Greylock's boys winning all by the 100 on the track.

Drury coach Jim Buffoni said one of the bright spots for the Blue Devils — other than their individual wins — was a second-place finish by Conner Meehan in the two-mile run. Meehan finished in 10:24, just seven seconds behind Kirby, in Meehan's first-ever attempt at the distance.

Mount Greylock boys coach Kent Lemme was happy to see his mile relay team turn in a time of 3:44.6 despite running unopposed.

"Our 4-by-400 team ran well, even though they were uncontested," Lemme said. "I think they may go a little faster than that with some competition. But that was kind of a goal today, to see what we could do in the 4-by-4."

The Mounties had a healthy lead in the girls meet, 38-26, before Philips and Julia Szczepaki finished 1-2 in the 200 to make it a 19-point margin.

Gill was particularly excited by Phelps and Sydney Gurek in the high jump. Both cleared 4-6 to qualify for Western Mass in a season when the Mounties have been challenged by the construction project at their usual "home" track, Williams College's Weston Field.

"We haven't high jumped all year because we don't have a high jump at Mount Greylock," Gill said.
The loss of Williamstown's only track for the spring has made it difficult for some of the Mounties to be where they normally would be at this point in the season.

"The big things for us are the technical things," Gill said. "We can do all our conditioning. But high jump is really technical. ... Relay exchanges — and it shows — it's just different on a grass track. Relay exchanges, blocks and hurdling -- those are the big technical things that have hurt us.

"We've had to be a little more creative, and we're just not quite as prepared as we'd like to be. But, we haven't had a track in the last 17 years I've been here, so I'm not complaining."
