Drury's Sigsbury, Two From Greylock, Monument's Hunter Qualify for Golf State Meet

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Defending Western Massachusetts Division 2 golf champions Drury High School finished tied for third Monday afternoon at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.

 

The title was handed off to Cathedral High School of Springfield, who finished with a total score of 324.

 

Drury tied Mount Greylock with a total of 345. Doug Sigsbury led the Blue Devils carding an 80. Nick Boulger finished with an 85, Nick Bator finished with an 89, and Alex Candiloro had a 91.

 

For Mount Greylock, junior Matt Wiseman had a team high score of 81. Kyle Alvarez finished two strokes behind him with an 83, Ben Gilooly had an 84, and Bennett Zimmerman scored a 97.

 

Four Berkshire County players qualified for the state tournament, tallying a score of 83 or lower. Owen Hunter of Monument Mountain with a 79, Sigsbury, and Mount Greylock's Wiseman and Alvarez.

 

“This is not our home course for Greylock, but Matt and Kyle have both played here before,” Greylock coach Brian Gil said. “Neither one really played their best round either, but we really had high hopes for them and Matt made by two and Kyle by the skin of his teeth.

 

“It’s really great for us,” Gil continued. “It’s a tough course and the greens were super-fast today, so those are good scores.”

 

For the sectional champions, Cathedral, Joseph Brosseau led the team with a score of 76. He was earned medalist honors.

 

Teammates Maxwell Cocchi and William Marchand, who will be joining Brosseau at states, finished with an 81 and 82. Michael Brosseau and Zachary Steigmeyer both carded 85s and Partick Ryan finished with an 86.

 

Runner-up, Palmer High School finished with a score of 334. Its top player, Zachary James, finished one stroke behind Cathedral's Brosseau with a score of 77. Matt Gazaille had an 83, and, Zachar Handzer and Nathan Murphy both scored 87s.

 

James and Gazaille of Palmer are also two of the 11 players who qualified for States.

 

The following players who qualified for the State tournament: Nathan Patterson of Frontier with an 82, Sean Ryan of Hampshire with an 82, and James Longhi of Southwick who finished with an 83.

 

Both Cathedral and Palmer qualified as a team for States by finishing first and second in Western Mass.

 

The state tournament will be contested on Monday, Oct. 27, at Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis, Mass.

DIVISION 3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass -- The Lee golf team just missed qualifying for the state tournament, finishing with a score of 346 at the Division 3 sectional on Monday.

 

The Wildcats finished in fourth place at Franconia Golf course, four strokes behind second-place St. Mary's.

 

Lee combined for a 346, led by Devyn Olds with a 79. Olds just missed qualifying for the state tournament as an individual.

 

The team title was won by Pioneer with a 322. Hopkins' Caleb Farnham was the medalist with a 5-over 76.

 

DIVISION 1

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- Minnechaug's Steve Hunt carded an even par round of 72 to lead his team to victory in the Western Mass Division 1 tournament at Wynanetuck Country Club on Monday.

 

Taconic's Mitch Omelenchuck finished tied for fifth at 2-over 75. Pittsfield's Justin Martin tied for 11th place at 79.
