ADAMS, Mass. – The McCann Tech girls cross country team Tuesday was dominant on its home course at the Greylock Glen.

But the Hornets still ended up giving away a dual meet win.

McCann Tech does not have enough girls or boys running this fall to post a team score. But the three Hornets who competed on Tuesday took the top three spots in a three-way meet with Mahar and Smith Vocational.

Actually, Mahar did not have any girls team, but the Senators edged the Vikings, 26-34, in the only contested dual meet of the day.

Mahar’s Isiah Whitmore covered the course in 20 minutes, 3 seconds to take first place in the boys race and lead his team to victory.

McCann Tech’s Aliza Rozon won the girls race in 26:21. She was chased across the finish line by teammates Julia Vareschi (26:44) and Clair McGrath (29:54) in second and third, respectively.

And that’s where the scoring ended for the Hornets, who would have needed five finishers to score in the meet.

“We’re super bummed with the numbers this year,” McCann Tech coach Bryana Malloy said. “This is my fifth year coaching, and I’ve had at least a team of 20 kids. So this is the first year that we’re not really able to post a score, which is a bummer because we do have a handful of dedicated runners.”

McCann Tech had three boys entered in Tuesday’s home opener.

Jack Delmolino finished in 26:30 to place sixth in a 20-runner field.

Jay Delmolino and Preston Hntonko crossed the finish line five seconds apart to finish 14th and 15th, respectively.

Malloy said her student-athletes are missing out on a little of the team experience but still enjoying their season.

“It’s nice to, as a team, be able to celebrate when they finish and take the win home,” she said. “But I think everybody just is passionate about running. So it doesn’t matter. They’re just happy to do their best and cheer each other along the way.”

McCann Tech has its second and final home meet next Tuesday against Turners Falls.
