BUCKLAND, Mass. – There hardly is anything new about the Mount Greylock track and field teams cleaning up at the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Championships.

But each did it in a slightly new way this year.

Senior Chase Doyle, who did not even compete in the sport until this spring, won two events on Friday at Mohawk Trail, and sophomore Noah Klompus, who took up the event of pole vaulting a few weeks ago, soared to a first-place finish to add 10 points to the Mounties’ dominating performance.

Mount Greylock’s girls, who traditionally come at the competition with waves of strong performers, had to shake off the absence of a few key performers who were lucky enough to score tickets to a concert in Foxborough on Friday but still scored 29 points more than the rest of the field.

On the boys side, Doyle won the high jump and took the 110-meter hurdles with a dominating time of 15.38 seconds that was .6 seconds ahead of the field and would have placed third in the state at last year’s Division 6 Championships.

Klompus cleared 10 feet with room to spare to win a five-team field and add 10 points to the team total in an event that has not been contested in Berkshire County in years.

“I run kind of fast, and I have enough upper body strength to kind of brute force myself over the pole, and coach said, ‘Do you want to score at States?’ and I said, ‘Sure,’ “ Klopmus said after his win.

Friday was Klompus’ sixth time on a pole: four post-practice sessions with Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils, a trial run at last week’s Berkshire County Individuals meet and Friday’s win at the PVIAC/Berkshire County championships.

“I really like that it’s simultaneously a mix of all the events, where you’re running fast, you’re jumping high, you’re throwing far – but it’s also totally different,” Klompus said of the pole vault. “It’s it’s own thing, and every single motion is just different. So it’s fun.”

Mount Greylock’s boys also got strong jumps and throws from Dan Warren and Jenner Kittle, who took first in the long jump and javelin, respectively, to help the team win a fifth straight Western Mass title.

On the track, the Mounties won the 4-by-400 relay, one of two Berkshire County relay wins on Friday.

Lenox’s boys won the 4-by-800 relay to help their team place sixth overall.

Wahconah was the second-highest finishing county school at the regional championships, coming in fourth behind victories from Alex Perenick in the 400 hurdles and Payton Shippee in the discus.

Taconic’s Josh Stevens won the shot put to help the Thunder finish fifth in the 21-team boys field.

Monument Mountain placed fifth in the girls competition thanks in part to wins from its 4-by-800 relay and high jumper Lily Haskins-Vaughan.

Mount Greylock’s girls ended up with four first-place finishers, led by sprinter Maggie Nichols, who doubled in the 100 and 200.

The Mounties’ Nora Lopez won the javelin, and Lily Catelotti won the discus.

Their points plus the team’s depth equaled a 21st Western Mass crown and third in the last five championships (no meet in 2020).

Mount Greylock girls coach Dils said he was a little nervous early on Friday afternoon because the team was without several seeded athletes – one lost to injury and four to the Taylor Swift concert.

Catelotti indicated it was a good kind of nervousness.

“I think sometimes [it adds pressure], but also, not too much pressure because we all support each other, and it’s awesome,” she said. “I think people showed up today, and that pressure was good. We haven’t had that pressure yet this spring.”

Along with Lopez and Catelotti, Hoosac Valley’s Gabby Billetz gave Berkshire County a clean sweep of the throws, winning the shot put to help the Hurricanes place sixth in a 20-team girls field.

Lenox’s girls were eighth, anchored by Alice Culver’s late kick to take the 2-mile run, passing Pope Francis’ Jessica Kenyon in the last 200 meters after the two battled at the front of the lap for eight laps.

“She was on me for the first five or six laps, and I was kind of nervous, because I knew she was planning on passing me,” Culver said. “Then once she passed me [on lap seven], I knew all I had to do was stick with her. I think, at that point, it’s really easy to fall behind and get discouraged, but I knew I just had to stick with her.

“Then, coming around the last quarter, 150 meters to go, I knew I could do it. I knew I had that kick in me, and I just had to give it all I had. And it paid off.”
