'Remarkable Day' for Spartans in Wins over Wahconah
GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. – Keaghan Kline and Jasper Livak each won a pair of races Wednesday to lead the Monument Mountain girls swim team to a 103-67 win over Wahconah.
Monument’s boys, meanwhile, got a win by Braydon Hoskeer, who took first the 100-yard breaststroke by .5 seconds to help put away an 88-77 victory.
It was a day of close finishes at the Kilpatrick Athletic Center, where the Spartans got a half-second win in the boys’ 200 freestyle relay, and Wahconah’s Victoria Lattizzori took the 100 backstroke by .48 seconds.
It also was a day for individual accomplishments that went beyond who touched first.
“We had two guys who’ve been working really hard for three years to try to break 30,” Monument Mountain coach Jill Svirida said. “They swam the 50 together, and they both broke 30, and it’s because they worked.
“Yesterday, they were like, ‘What can I do to fix my dive?’ They did it, and they did the dive that way today. Their hard work is paying off.”
The Spartans in question, Jacob Haskins-Vaughn and Rocco Villano, placed second and third, respectively, behind Wahconah’s Artois Sancho in the sprint.
Sancho and Kalen Spratt each was a double winner for Wahconah. Sancho took the 100 free in addition to the 50. Spratt 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Sancho is one of the Wahconah swimmers on the verge of qualifying for the Western Massachusetts tournament, coach Steve Kolis said.
“Victoria [Lattizzori] is very close in the backstroke,” Kolis said. “I think she missed it by a whisker. Artois [Sancho] in the 50 freestyle, I think he missed that by a whisker, and his split in the 200 free relay would have made the cut, but that doesn’t count.”
Wahconah’s girls finished the meet strong with wins by Lattizzori in the back and Emily Capogna in the 100 breaststroke.
But they could not overcome the Spartans’ sweep of the relays behind performances by Kline, Livak, Sara Isby, Brayden Tyer, Tess Holmes and Adalyn Shufelt.
Teamwork is a defining characteristic of the Monument Mountain squad, Svirida said.
“These kids show up for each other,” she said. “They are really close. And they care about each other, and they work really hard, they’re really focused, they want to improve. They want to win, but they really want to improve.
“And so they’re just as excited about someone breaking eight minutes in the 500 as somebody qualifying for Western Mass in the 500 – both of which happened today. We celebrate it all, they celebrate it all. And it feels really good.”
The Spartans had a little something extra to celebrate on Wednesday as Svirida notched her 349th and 350th dual meet wins as the coach at Monument Mountain.
“I didn’t tell the team before,” she said. “It’s not really my wins. It’s the team’s wins. But it feels really good to me to celebrate that with these kids, because it was such a remarkable day.”
