WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Four Berkshire County wrestlers will contend for state titles when the Division 3 semi-finals are held Saturday at Wakefield High School.

The Mount Everett Eagles have half those semi-finalists after Friday’s first day of competition.

At 106 pounds, Diego Cruz advanced with a pair of pins.

In the first round, he stopped East Longmeadow’s Logan Matos in just 20 seconds. In the quarters, Cruz pinned Rockland’s James Spinney midway through the second period.

On Saturday, Cruz will battle for a berth in the state championship match against Logan Costello of Ashland in the final four.

Cruz’ teammate Connor Lupiani reached the semi-finals with an 8-5 win over Ludlow’s Ryan Gomes in the quarters. Lupiani started his day by pinning Scituate’s Liam Theriault at the 2 minute, 29 second mark of their bout.

Lupiani on Saturday faces Andrew Valley of host Wakefield in the semis.

No Berkshire County team has more wrestlers competing on Saturday than Mount Greylock, which has three of its six state tournament entrants still alive – one in the championship bracket and two in the consolations.

At 175 pounds, Jacob Borawski reached the final four with a pair of wins on Friday.

First, Borawski pinned South Hadley’s Jasiel Ramos in 1:28. Then Borawski won when his opponent was disqualified late in the second period of their quarter-final match.

Mount Greylock currently has 27 points, which puts it in 14th place among 52 teams at the D3 Championships, the highest place of any Berkshire County team after Day 1. Tewksbury leads the competition with 72.5 points.

Taconic has two wrestlers alive for Day 2, including the county’s fourth state semi-finalist.

Noah Poirier earned a pair of pins on Friday in the 175-pound weight class.

First, he stopped Dedham’s Falco Heaslip in 23 seconds. Then Poirier ended his match with Wakefield’s Zach Arria midway through the second period.

On Saturday, Poirier will face Ashland’s Anton Puhach with a spot in the title match on the line.
