Lenox Girls, Mount Greylock Boys Earn Wins

LENOX, Mass. – The Lenox girls tennis team Thursday continued the momentum it gained at the start of the season with a fourth straight win as the Millionaires downed Mount Greylock, 4-1.
In the boys match, it was the Mounties who won an early season battle of unbeatens, sweeping the Millionaires, 5-0, to hand Lenox its first loss in four outings.
Mount Greylock’s boys (2-0) dropped just one set in setting the stage for a Friday showdown at reigning Western Massachusetts Class C Champion Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter.
But up first on Thursday at the Lenox Community Center was the girls match.
Julia Zanin and Caity Giardina each won in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, and Lenox swept doubles play to run its record to 4-0 this spring.
First-year coach Nicole Brooks said her squad got a big lift back on March 30 when it swept Belchertown in the season opener.
“Our first test was Belchertown,” Brooks said. “Last year, they had won, [4-1], and this year, we were able to sweep them. That was probably the most exciting for them because they came in thinking it was going to be another wipe.
“They were able to do it, and it gave them a sense of confidence that I think was necessary going into the season.”
The lone setback for Lenox’s girls on Thursday came at first singles, where Mount Greylock seventh-grader Scarlett earned a 6-3, 6-2 win.
But, overall, Lenox continued to show the improvement Brooks – a close observer of the 2025 squad – has seen in the team from year to year.
“I’m so happy with what they’ve worked on in the off-season,” Brooks said. “Julia Zanin has been phenomenal on the court. She’s been a solid competitor this year. She came in as the third. There are matches where I’ve had to put her in second, and she has stepped up and risen to the occasion every single time.
“Caity Giardina is another one. Toward the end [last year], she played a lot of third singles. She was the fourth alternate for a lot of the season also. And the fact that she’s come in strong speaks to the work they’re putting in in the off-season. It’s been great to watch.”
Mount Greylock coach Stephen Bryant has been watching the Mounties for a while and knew he had a strong group of returners from last season plus one player who competed at first singles as a seventh grader back in 2022 and returned to the high school team this year.
“I’m definitely happy with what I see in all the boys,” Bryant said. “Everyone’s improved from last year. It’s nice having the addition of Tate. It just makes our team even deeper. … He was at Greylock a few years ago. He moved around, but he’s back at Greylock.
“And he’s played a lot of tennis tournaments and was ranked 12th in New England. So he’s very experienced.”
On Thursday, he applied that experience to a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles.
Carothers and teammates Oscar Heeringa and Max Wied combined to drop just seven games in their three singles wins.
Walter Love and Nico McWeeny also cruised to 6-1, 6-1 wins at first doubles. In second doubles, Lenox’s David Jordao and Farid Vizcardo pushed their opponents to a third set, but the Mounties’ Keaton Repetto and AJ Richardson finished strong, winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-3, and completing the sweep.
As Repetto and Richardson pulled away in the tie-breaker, Bryant was able to look ahead to Friday’s test at home against the Dragons.
“They have the No. 1 still, a strong doubles team, their second doubles from last year is playing first doubles,” he said. “Their lineup looks strong, so I expect a nice match with them.”
