WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Mount Greylock girls track and field team got a win from Nora Lopez in the javelin and used its strength in the relays on Saturday to earn a second-place finish at the Division 6 Track and Field Championships at Westfield State.

The Mounties’ quartet of Cornelia Swabey, Riley Dickinson, Ani KoaMaya and Brenna Lopez clocked a time of 9 minutes, 59.17 seconds to win the 4-by-800 relay.

Mount Greylock’s 4-by-400 relay of Coralea Lash-St. John, Maeve Madrigal, Madelyn Gaudreau and Rowan Apotsos then finished the meet with a third-place finish to sew up second-place in the team standings.

The Berkshire County contingent brought home two individual titles from the second and final day of the state meet.

Monument Mountain’s Everett Pacheco outkicked Parker Charter’s Nathaniel Henshaw for a one-second victory in the mile run to lead the Spartans to a third-place team showing.

Monument Mountain Saturday also got a fourth-place showing from Oliver Curtis in the 400-meter dash and a silver in the long jump from Siddy Culbreth, who earned a gold in the triple jump on the meet’s first day on Thursday.

The county almost picked up another boys individual title in the long jump, where Wahconah’s Cooper Calvert cleared the winning height of 6 feet, 4 inches but ended up second in a three-way tie among the jumpers who remained at that height.

Pacheco said he was able to run the race he wanted in defending his state title in the mile.

“I didn’t want to go out in the lead for sure,” he said. “I wanted other people to do most of the work, and then my goal was to be in the lead with 600 to go. I executed that and then crossed the line first – checked all the boxes.”

He also succeeded in winning the race that was his main focus coming into the weekend.

“We were here on Thursday doing the 800 and the 2-mile, but this was definitely my main goal,” he said. “The mile is my best event, so I wanted to come out and win this one for sure.”

Pacheco said he most likely will wrap up the high school season next weekend at the All-State meet at Merrimack College. Then he will take a little break before gearing up for the fall at Williams College, where he plans to run cross country and track and field.

There, he will cross paths – sort of – with the Mounties’ Lopez, who is headed to NESCAC rival Tufts University to compete in track and field for the Jumbos.

On Saturday, she delivered the county’s longest javelin throw of the spring with a winning throw of 122 feet, 7 inches, bettering the field by just more than 4 feet.

“It was on my sixth and final attempt,” Lopez said. “My coaches, Coach Ed Bianchi and Coach [Brian] Gill said, ‘Go out there, and it’s house money at this point. Just try your best. It’s the last throw of high school,’ “ Lopez said.

Mount Greylock’s seniors traditionally miss the All-State meet because of a conflict with their Saturday morning graduation exercises.

And after two years finishing on the top of the standings at the D6 meet, Mount Greylock missed in its try for a “three-peat,” but not by much. And the Mounties came closer than it appeared they would after ending Thursday night’s portion of the competition in fourth place.

“We had a lot of people pick up points,” Lopez said. “We just had an amazing 4-by-400 that sealed the deal for us. Everyone was running their hearts out today – and throwing, too.”
