SHELBURNE FALLS, Mass. — Led by some solid pitching and error-free baseball, the Hoosac Valley baseball team opened up the 2011 season with a 4-0 road win over Mohawk on Saturday.

Junior Mike Koperniak threw five and one third innings to get the win, striking out six batters and walking just one. Classmate Collin Kilne struck out one batter and got the final five outs to secure the Hurricanes' first win of the season.

Hoosac scored one run each in the first and fourth innings and opened up a little cushion late in the game with a two-run sixth frame. Junior Tanner Bird went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and a run batted in to lead the offense, while senior Nate Alibozek also had three hits to go along with two RBI.

The Hurricanes next play at Wahconah at 4 p.m. on Monday.
