CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Ryan Nodell scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game win Thursday as the Monson baseball team defeated Hoosac Valley, 9-6, on Thursday in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.

The victory avenged an 8-4 loss to the Hurricanes back on May 18, the day Hoosac Valley qualified for the post-season with its 10th win.

On Thursday, Monson took control of the game with a three-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. After the Hurricanes responded with three in the bottom of the fifth, the Mustangs scored three more in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Luc Trombley went 2-for-4 with a double, and Cole Desroches and Devin Kogut each went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Hurricanes (11-10).

Kogut and Henry Sniezek combined to strike out 10 on the mound for Hoosac Valley.

Monson moves on to the sectional quarter-finals to face either Wahconah or Mohawk Trail, who meet on Friday in Dalton in another rematch from the regular season; Wahconah beat Mohawk, 2-0, back on April 19.
