Leyda Leads Mount Greylock in Comeback Win
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Malcolm Leyda went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles Thursday to lead the Mount Greylock baseball team to a 15-12 win over Tamarac (N.Y.).
Leyda drove in two runs and scored five times after drawing two walks to reach base in all five of his plate appearances.
He also accounted for three of the Mounties’ seven stolen bases.
Mount Greylock overcame a rough schedule and a rough start to earn its third win of the year, coach Rick Paris said.
“I can’t be more proud of my guys,” Paris said. “We just played three games in four days and were coming off two five-inning shortened games where we lost a combined 29-3. And we played late [Wednesday] night into the 10 o’clock hour.
“We went down 8-1 after 2 and a half innings, and my guys could easily have just packed it in, but instead they kept fighting and playing hard and we were able to have a huge team win. It started with Cole Creighton coming in relief for his first appearance on varsity and getting us out of trouble. He made pitches when he had to and two times he had bases loaded with one out and was able to induce a ground ball which ended in a 5-4-3 double play.”
Tamarac had the Mounties on the ropes in the final inning before another Mount Greylock pitcher stepped up, Paris said.
“With two outs, we went to a freshman Andrew Holland for his first appearance and, in one pitch, he was able to induce a ground ball, game-ending double play,” Paris said.
Emery Rotter went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, and Asher Barrale was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Eli Kristensen (2-for-4) doubled and drove in two runs in a 12-hit Mount Greylock attack.
Leyda, Creighton, Kristensen and Holland split time on the mound.
Mount Greylock (3-5) hosts Lenox on Wednesday.
