SOUTHWICK, Mass. -- Robbie Buffis has sure made a big impact for the Mount Greylock baseball team in the two and half weeks he's been on the varsity squad. The freshman hurler just continues to get better day by day, playing a more pivotal role on the Mounties' pitching staff as the days go by.

On Thursday, Buffis continued his season to remember by throwing a complete-game three-hitter in a 5-0 win over No. 8 Southwick in the first round of the Division 2 Western Massachusetts Baseball Tournament. Buffis struck out one batter and walked two on his way to improving his season record to 4-0. He has picked up victories in four out of Greylock's last six wins, helping the No. 9 Mounties (12-9) finish the season with a record of 7-2.

Buffis received solid support from his offense in the win, as the visitors outhit the Rams (12-9) 7-3 overall. Senior captain Tommy Nowlan led the way by hitting a triple, a double and scoring a pair of runs. Classmate Kyle Byrnes also had a double and a run batted in, while sophomore Eddie Dufur chipped in by going 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Mounties scored one run in the second inning and slowly built on that lead by scoring two more in the third and one more in the fourth. Greylock helped Buffis on the mound by only committing two errors on defense. Southwick, meanwhile, made four miscues on the day.

The Mounties now advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round against top-seeded Monument Mountain. The Spartans beat Greylock at home in their only meeting this year by a score of 9-1. The game will be played in Great Barrington, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
