Pittsfield High Baseball Game Suspended after One Inning

The Generals’ matchup with Uxbridge Monday was suspended after one inning with a 1-1 score due to unplayable conditions.
The two teams have been scheduled to resume the contest on Tuesday at Clapp Park Springfield Central at 4 p.m.
The forecast as of 7 p.m. on Monday calls for an 80 percent chance of rain on Tuesday.
The Pittsfield-Uxbridge game already has been postponed once due to weather. It originally was going to be played on Saturday afternoon, but was moved to Monday because of rain; Sunday was not an option because of Pittsfield High’s graduation.
On Monday, there was one more wrench thrown into the works when the Uxbridge bus broke down on the Mass Pike.
As the visitors carpooled to Clapp Park, the Generals worked on the field right up until the teams began their infield/outfield warmup routine.
And that work continued after warmups, but the game finally was able to get underway.
Pittsfield starting pitcher Jason Codey appeared to have some trouble gripping the ball and walked two of the first three batters he faced.
The fourth, Willem Haker, drove in a run with a single up the middle.
Codey settled down and got the next two outs on strikeouts to leave runners at the corners.
His offense then rewarded him with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Morrie Fried reached on a one-out single to left and moved up when Jack Reed grounded out to the right side.
Camden Zerbato ripped a single up the middle to score Fried and tie the game.
Pittsfield coach Drew Pearce said after the game was suspended that he had to think about whether he would come back with Codey on the mound for the resumption.
But as the rain continued to fall, Pearce was able to find a bright side to the afternoon.
“That was a good little bonding experience,” Pearce said. “We got the rakes out, we got the quick dry out, and we worked together, and we had a good time trying to put a game together and play.
“And we got it. We got it started, which was quite an accomplishment.”
